Just off the shores of Sharm el Sheikh, the wreck's top can be easily spotted protruding from the water in Nabq Bay. Experienced divers can effortlessly plunge to depths as far as 22 meters, while snorkelers can enjoy a lot of its structure barely beneath 10 meters.

Exploring this unique location above sea level is also a breeze, with the lengthy jetty at the Jaz Mirabel resort providing access when it's open and sea conditions permit. In the past people have been able to use the jetty who are not staying at the hotel, but have had to pay a fee.

Before meeting its untimely end off the coast of Sharm el Sheikh in 1996, the Million Hope had a series of incarnations. Initially built as a bulk tanker named "Ryusei Maru", it was sold for a whopping 136 million to the Aksonas Shipping Co Ltd of Limassol, Cyprus, merely six weeks before the tragedy.

At the time of the disaster, it was transporting 26,000 tonnes of chemical nutrients to Taiwan. An unexpected fire near Nabq Bay led it to collide head-on with shallow reefs, abruptly ending what could have been a prosperous venture.

Today, this colossal vessel has surrendered to nature's embrace, morphing into a stunning artificial reef adorned with vibrant corals and serving as a sanctuary for a multitude of colorful fish species.

Safety precautions for Million Hope

The Million Hope wreck's location can pose a daunting challenge for divers and a potential hazard for snorkelers, so it's crucial to heed the flags on hotel piers and the advice from local dive companies and guides.

The area where the wreckage rests is often subject to winds that whip up considerable surge. This can sometimes make diving too dangerous or prevent day boats from mooring safely. Always prioritize safety - the wreck is a great dive site when the conditions are good.
